Review:

Think of Berserk as one big flashback because, well… it is. It gives you a little taste of The Black Knight’s current lifestyle in the first episode and then delves into his past for the remainder of the series. The thing is, within that one episode, Berserk manages to raise enough questions that you’ll want to know the answers to. Who is The Black Knight? Where did he come from? Why the big-ass sword? What is he so pissed off about? What’s with that necklace thing? What happened to his eye? And the list goes on and on. Luckily, Berserk manages take all those questions and answer them with one hell of a compelling medieval anime that will never lose your interest the entire time. Not only can it keep action fans occupied with epic sword-fights and massive amounts of bloodshed but it also combines that with some remarkable character depth. From the moment Guts hits the screen this anti-hero’s presence alone makes this series worth watching but when allies such as Caska, Judeau, and the homoesque Griffith become part of his life through forced intervention… things only get more interesting. Guts doesn’t need anyone nor does he want anyone in his life but when people start forcing their way in he quickly builds up the emotional barriers but yet still holds respect for his allies and starts to acknowledge them on the battlefield as Guts begins to leave his self-centeredness behind. You’ll see that the more Guts changes, the more he stays the same. Because, you’ll never tire of seeing Guts cut someone in half with that huge sword.

Don’t let the age of the series turn you away as it has some truly great animation and put with it’s hand-painted backgrounds Berserk is one fantastic looking anime. Action, blood, a magnificent plot, enough character depth to bury you, and one of anime’s greatest anti-heros, Berserk is one series that should not be passed up. The only downside here is that there is no sense of closure and will have you clamoring for a second season but since it’s been over ten years things were looking bleak… until recently. Rumors of another season of Berserk have risen along with a few stills of the show but nothing has been confirmed. Maybe there’s some hope after all.

Review:

Okay… girls with guns, check. Hideous monsters, check. Lots of action, check. Lolis… … ch-check? Well, what we have here looks to be the makings of a great action series but I’d hate to break it to you, this anime is nothing what you hoped it would be. It opens with a rockin’ intro song followed by having you watch Sumire and Lucia quickly dispose of a few enemies with very little background on the viruses that they are fighting, but it’s just enough of an explination to keep you from asking questions about what is going on. But after a couple episodes, Venus Versus Virus starts presenting it’s character depth and also a detailed history to bring the story up to present day. The thing is, we’ve got two good looking girls here and with a short series like this you’re not going to care about their past or how everyone is involved by some mishap. No, you just want to put a gun in these girls’ hands and throw them into battle, mini-skirts and all, and watch them kick some demon ass. Venus Versus Virus is the type of show that wants to explain everything in detail but it doesn’t really need to because it’s target audience isn’t going to care, I even found myself growing bored with it unless bullets were flying through the air and demons were launching attacks that defied the laws of physics. And the bottom line is that while Venus Versus Virus spends all its time making sure no plot holes are left behind, it also cuts itself short leaving the audience with an ending that has absolutely no closure.

It’s got some good animation, and a solid story to back it up, but at it’s core… this is an action series that also wants the viewer to have an in-depth look at everything you’ll be watching. But oddly enough, this makes it boring… you’ll just be wanting to see two girls opening up a can of whoop ass on anything that gets in their way but it just doesn’t happen enough. Instead, you’ll be watching 12 episodes of an anime that tries to explain the mysterious first 10 minutes at the beginning of the series but instead ends it with the same cliffhanger that no one will save you from.

*Note – This anime was tagged as yuri (lesbian). Well, other than what you see in the intro, there is none, nothing, not even two girls holding hands during the show so I have no idea where the hell that came from.

*Note 2 – About halfway through the series, Netflix canceled my rental and said that Venus Versus Virus has been replaced by a new version and sent me that one instead. So, I had to watch the last 4 episodes with FUNimations re-release. If you’re wondering, yes, they did change ADV’s original release putting 6 episodes per disc, which is cool, but changed ADV’s subtitles with their own usual white-shadowed subs which was a huge disappointment as the ADV subtitles were far superior. Not that it really matters because this series isn’t worth more than a rental to begin with.

Synopsis:

Karas is the story of humans and demons living in alternate realities however they run parallel to each other, in other words the demons are there… you just can’t see them. Some demons have started to reveal thier existence however and started lashing out and killing humans for thier blood. To maintain the peace between the two worlds is Karas, a warrior created by the spirit of a city called Yurine, which resembles an albino cat-like girl, who uses the soul of one human to act as Karas. This time she has chosen Otoha, a former Yakuza member that is second to none when it comes to wielding a sword. The source of the recent demon attacks in the human realm is traced back to Eko, a former Karas who after 400 years has grown tired of protecting the city and the human world altogether and thier arrogance towards demons and takes it upon himself to erradicate humanity.

Review:

Let me tell you, Karas is one fantastic looking anime and that’s also the problem… it’s one fantastic looking anime. This two part movie (which is actually 6 episodes spliced together) is all flash and lacks any substance what-so-ever which only has you looking forward to the next fight to get started. This wouldn’t be a bad thing if the focus was supposed to be all action and didn’t reside in the 3 hour span but alas Karas tries to tell a story of sentient beings who lived on our planet long before us but you probably won’t care as this story just doesn’t match up well with the level of action being presented. The whole thing comes off as confusing sometimes and when things are being explained in dialog a huge fight breaks out and then you lose track of what was going on as you’ll be caught-up in the next melee battle and when it’s over you forget what anyone was talking about.

I found Karas relatively average, just because an anime looks good doesn’t mean it is good. The movie can’t seem to explain itself in 3 hours mainly because it spends most of the time dazzling the viewer but damn if it ain’t one slick looking show. I’m not sure if I can recommend Karas as I was growing bored with it amongst all the destruction going on there wasn’t much of a point of why it was happening. If you want to watch full body armored samurai fight to the death then give it a shot but if you want a story driven movie with great characters to match then you’ll want to pass… this isn’t it. But if this may be up your alley then grab Karas: The Prophecy and Karas: The Revelation at the same time as it’s one long movie from start to finish.
